The beautiful Diski Diva, Sibongile Masuku is no stranger to controversy and is not one to hold back when it comes to expressing herself.
Following an incident when she made an English mistake, Twitter Trolls jumped on the bandwagon, slamming her English and likening her to Bonang.
The Bloemfontein Celtic player Khethokwakhe Masuku’s wife, Sibongile, made a slip when she said “on the office” amongst others, and Twitter was quick to catch that and memes were created to celebrate her English.
Or laugh at it.
While some defended her, like:

… others were quite merciless. Amen.

Not to be put out, she responded in a lengthy post:
“I am a pedi girl, Born and raised in the village of Sinthumule in Limpopo. I went to school there and stayed there for most of my life. I only moved to Jo’burg in 2012 after I met my husband. I am fluent in Sepedi, ShiVenda and Zulu and people still have the audacity to ask me to speak proper English? I don’t owe anyone good English.”
“I know who I am‚ so I knew that people would have something to say about the way I say what’s on my mind. I knew that people would pick at my body‚ my face and the way I speak but the people that matter know who I am already‚ so I don’t really care for the negative comments.”
Incidentally, Sibongile is not the only celebrity who has been shamed for having bad English. Somizi, Zahara, Bonang, DJ Zinhle, Babes Wodumo, Mandoza … the list endless.
Perhaps it is time for people to accept that we as South Africa’s were not meant to speak English, and proudly accept our mother tongues.
